At the Sheriff’s Station, Boyd, Donna, Tabitha, Henry, Jade and Ellis gather to discuss the yellow suit that Victor found in the forest. Henry reveals that Miranda used to paint a Man in a Yellow Suit, and Tabitha and Jade point out that Victor recognized and was terrified by it. However, Boyd points out that there is much that they do not know and suggests they talk to Victor. Henry promises to speak with him, and before leaving, he remarks that for 40 years, the Boy in White and Man in Yellow were simply paintings in his basement.

After Henry departs, Donna asks Tabitha if she's told him that she may be the reincarnation of his wife. Tabitha has not, still unsure whether it was real, and Boyd concurs that they need to be certain. They agree to keep the knowledge of the Man in Yellow confined to the people in the room. Jade asks Tabitha if there is anything she can remember through Miranda’s memories, while Donna points out the danger of Jade taking “magic mushrooms he found in a haunted forest.” Boyd is not pleased with the idea either, but acknowledges the need to take risks to better understand what they are facing, promising to watch over Jade. Donna relents, sending Ellis to lead a food run to the Settlement, and warning Jade that he might not come back from this. At Tabitha’s request, Boyd leaves her and Jade alone to chat.

At the Myers’ House, Sara greets Sophia (The Man in Yellow) as she sorts through the Pastor’s belongings. Believing Kenny has told Sophia about her prior misdeeds, she asks Sophia why she would choose to live with her. Sophia answers that while Sara did terrible things, and that her "father" always used to say only good people are tortured by the bad things they have done. Sara, appreciative, leaves to make them breakfast. Once alone, Sophia mutters to herself. And as Sara makes her way down the stairs, she starts experiencing stabbing pains in her head and starts to cry out.

Back at the police station, Tabitha asks Jade why he was with Ethan in the woods. Jade explains that Ethan saw Jim, who told him to find the Lake of Tears. Tabitha says the lake is not real, and Jade notes that sometimes children retreat into their imaginations when things get too scary. Tabitha apologizes for what she told him in the Barn when Jim was found dead, telling him to be careful with the mushrooms before leaving. Boyd returns, and Jade ingests several mushrooms.

Tabitha returns to her house and overhears Ethan trying to speak with Jim through the Matthews' RV radio. Tabitha enters, and asks him why he didn’t tell her about the Lake of Tears. He replies that he knew she would not believe him, and believed that once he found it, he could prove to her it was real. Tabitha tells him to pack a bag as they are going to try and find it.

In the bus, Julie and Randall read through Ethan’s books to find useful information that could assist in her saving her dad. Randall finds something about a StoryWalker Fred in the Adventures of the Grand Gooligog. However, they are interrupted by Tabitha, who tells Julie to pack a bag so they can find the Lake of Tears, as Jim told him to find it. Julie is confused by the mention of her father, unaware Ethan had seen him, and Tabitha believes that Ethan is simply grieving. Julie wishes to stay in town, promising she will be safe with Randall. Tabitha speaks privately with Randall, warning him of the consequences if he breaks her daughter’s trust. Tabitha hugs Julie before leaving.

Meanwhile, Ellis reluctantly prepares to leave for the food run to the Settlement, but Fatima urges him to go. Tabitha and Ethan join them, and Donna leaves Kenny in charge of Colony House in her absence. After everyone leaves, Fatima heads to Elgin’s room, which is now filled with piles of clay. She thanks him but asks to be alone, as she needs to do the remainder of her plan, alone.

Outside, Henry finds Victor checking to see if the trees have moved, explaining it is a sign that things are changing. Henry joins him. Indoors, Kenny finds a leak and heads upstairs to investigate, and finds Fatima sculpting the piles of clay.

At the Sheriff’s Station, Jade waits for the mushrooms to kick in, while Boyd looks through a box of Abby’s mementos, including a note she wrote and her wedding ring, recalling the day he killed her. Kenny arrives, warning that he is needed at Colony House to deal with Fatima.

Elgin finds Sara in the Church, and recalls how this is where they met. Sara asks if he still sees the Kimono Woman, and whether it is because he did as she asked so she leaves him alone. Sara reveals that the voices that tormented her are now asking her to pour herself a glass of water, take a sip and then pour the remainder back into the pitcher. Elgin believes the instructions harmless, but Sara warns that there is always a consequence, and fears that she might somehow infect others.

Henry tells Victor that the trees are 23 steps away, and tries to broach the subject of the Man in Yellow, noting that Victor said he told himself it wasn’t real. Henry continues questioning Victor, who tells his father that he will show him what he means.

Boyd arrives at Colony House, and finds Fatima sculpting. She explains that she is making “a monster.”

Randall and Julie look through the Adventures of the Grand Gooligog, and Julie believes that it could provide instructions on how to Storywalk. Randall is skeptical, but she believes that the impossible things happening in the Township may seep out into the normal world, as her mother had dreams of it before she arrived. Julie tells him that she is going to try, whether he will help or not, and he asks what they need.

Fatima insists to Boyd that he does not need to be worried, but he notes that her actions say otherwise. She explains that she has not told Ellis yet so as not to worry him. Boyd asks her to explain to him what the sculpture is for. Fatima tells Boyd that her father used to explain the numerous different faiths to her, and how they were all roads to the Divine. She then asks him if he knows what a Golem is.

Boyd returns to Kenny outside and explains that she is making a Golem, a creature in religious folklore that acts as a guardian. Boyd believes they should simply give her some space, but Kenny retorts that they have both seen the Township change people to the point they are unrecognizable to those that knew them before, and it increasingly looks like that is what is happening with Fatima.

As they trek through the Forest to the Settlement, Donna asks Tabitha what she is doing. Tabitha admits she does not know, but feels terrified without Jim, and worries about the cost of remembering all the memories of those that came before her. Seeing Ethan and Ellis talking, and worries what will happen when Ethan learns the Lake of Tears is not real.

Donna calls for a break, and privately tells Tabitha that she is not alone, and she does not want to be put in the position where she has to tell Tabitha’s children that something awful has happened to her, referencing the note Tabitha had left her. Donna warns her not to do anything irrational, before Ethan calls out to them. They find an injured bird, and Ethan says they should bring the bird to be healed at the lake, believing it to be a sign.

At the Diner, Kristi and Mari observe Sophia standing by the pool, and wonder how she is coping. Kristi notes that she prays frequently, which Mari recalls was her least favorite part of narcotics anonymous. Sara arrives, and pours herself a glass of water, Bakta greets her, and when Sara says she won’t be long, kindly tells her that she is welcome to stay as long as she wishes. Sara praises her for reopening the Diner, and Bakta offers Sara her old job, believing that Sara deserves a place. Debating listening to the voice in her head, Sara decides not to go through with it and asks Bakta to dump out the glass she sipped from. Immediately after Bakta pours it out, everyone in the diner is startled by the sound of Sophia screaming. Mari and Kristi rush out to her, and find that Sophia has fallen into the empty pool. She explains that she felt as if she were pushed by an unseen force. Sara rushes back to the Diner and quickly takes a sip of water from a new cup, before pouring the remainder back into the pitcher, as she was instructed by the voices.

Jade finds Boyd on the stoop of Colony House, and Boyd confides in him that he does not know whether to stop or help Fatima. Jade admits that had it not been for his and Tabitha’s experience, he would not have considered taking the mushrooms, as they made him realize drastic action was necessary. He tells Boyd that the right question to ask her is not why she is making it, but why she has chosen to now.

Donna approaches the Totems on the outskirts of the Settlement, finding them creepy. While the others gather food, Tabitha, Donna and Ethan take the bird to the lake.

Randall returns to Julie with a stack of paper for the bookmarks, and finds her cutting her hair, which she explains is to prevent the Creatures from grabbing it as they did the last time she attempted Storywalking. They return to the ruins of the Dungeon, where Julie explains that she is going to leave a piece of paper upon which she’s drawn a symbol at the location she visits in the past. When she returns to the present, they will head to that location and see if it is present. She believes that it will allow her to return to the points in the story what she wishes. Randall, still skeptical, agrees.

Julie steps into the Ruins/Dungeon, and while her body experiences a seizure, she finds herself in Town back during Victor’s childhood, after everyone but him had been massacred. She finds the Man in Yellow feasting on one of the corpses before he spots her. As he walks towards her, she draws the symbol on the paper before she is transported back to the present as Randall pulls her out of the ruins. When she re-examines the paper, she finds it blank, and cries in frustration.

At the Clairy's Canned Goods Truck, Victor digs up a collection of drawings. Victor explains the Man in Yellow arrived in a car like everyone else, and was welcomed as a friend. However, when everyone died, he found the Man by the Bottle Tree, eating his mother Miranda’s corpse, while Henry stares in horror at the drawing.

At the Clinic, Kristi examines Sophia, finding her arm is broken. Sophia believes that the Township is a test of their faith, comparing it to God ordering Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac, providing ram in its Isaac’s place after Abraham tried to obey. God had never intended for Abraham to sacrifice his son, he merely wanted to know that he would. Meanwhile, Sara nervously watches Bakta pour the pitcher out.

Boyd and Kenny return to Fatima, and Boyd asks why she is creating the Golem now. Fatima explains that she feels connected to Smiley’s feelings, and he can feel her fear and enjoys it. The Golem helps her feel strong and less afraid, and it is her attempt at fighting back. Outside, Kenny wonders if the Golem will help, but Boyd says there are worse things than having a champion in their corner. Kenny leaves to spread word to give Fatima space, when Boyd notices a ring rolling down the stairs. When he picks it up, he finds that it is Abby’s ring. Meeting Jade downstairs he tells him that they need to leave. Boyd rushes back to the Sheriff’s Station and finds his keepsake box, and finds an identical ring inside. When he turns to where he left the ring he found in Colony House, he finds that it has vanished.

While Ellis, Patty and Roger pick crops, Ethan, Donna and Tabitha sprinkle water over the bird. Roger finds a massive rope leading into the lake, and begins pulling it. The others are alarmed as something large comes to the surface of the water, seemingly a cluster of dead bodies.
