Synopsis
In King's Landing
Criston parades Meleys's severed head through the city, though he is baffled that the smallfolk, near-starving due to the shipping blockade, consider it a bad omen and do not celebrate the victory.

Aegon has survived but is comatose and severely wounded, while Sunfyre is not expected to survive. He is brought to his chambers, where Grand Maester Orwyle and a group of other maesters try everything to save the king. Orwyle points out to Queen Alicent, that the following hours will decide the fate of the king. Aemond joins the situation and points out that someone has to rule in Aegon's absence.

Alicent visits Ser Criston in his chamber, who tells her that they conquered Rook's Rest under the loss of 900 men and the king's dragon Sunfyre, who seems to be dead, but withholds telling Alicent what part Aemond played in the battle.

In the Small Council Chamber, Grand Maester Orwyle tells Queen Alicent about King Aegon's serious injuries. Many broken bones, numerous burns and possibly more injuries inside the body. Orwyle isn't sure if the king would ever wake from his coma. So the Small Council decides to name a regent who leads the Greens in the king's absence. Alicent nominates herself as regent, citing her experience, but the council instead elect Prince Aemond, primarily due to his sex, saying that the choice demonstrates strength. Even Ser Criston agrees and Aemond becomes the Prince Regent. Aemond orders the city gates shut and cut down the corpses of the ratcatchers.

While the ratcatchers are taken away, Alicent confronts Criston furious about declaring Aemond as regent instead of her, but Cole describes to her the horrifying situation during the Battle at Rook's Rest and argues his choice with the words: "We have given the war to the dragons. A dragonrider should lead us."

Blacksmith Hugh tries everthing to reduce the fever of his daughter, while his wife tries to convince him to flee. But Hugh refuses, reminding her that the fire of the dragons is everywhere. But Kat reminds him that Rhaenyra will be furious about the Meleys's death and will attack the city in her wish for revenge. Kat suggests to flee to her brother in Tumbleton. Hugh still hasn't got the payment for his scorpions. So Hugh agrees, but just as Hugh, his family and masses of citizens attempt to flee, the gates are being closed by the City Watch of King's Landing.

Later, Helaena confronts Aemond in front of the Iron Throne, asking if it was worth the price.

Alicent sits at Aegon's bedside but leaves just before he awakens and weakly calls out to her.

In the Riverlands
Daemon and Willem Blackwood try to win over House Bracken, but they refuse to yield, even under the threat of dragonfire. Lord Amos Bracken even makes fun of Willem Blackwood's deceased brother and declares that House Bracken will choose fire instead of bending the knee to a Blackwood. Daemon thus orders the Blackwoods to take the Bracken stronghold, Stone Hedge. Willem points out that the Brackens won't yield in battle, but he suggests to use another weakness of them. Daemon agrees.

Daemon dreams of incest with his mother, who calls him her favorite son. The vision ends, when Daemon is woken up by Simon Strong. He finds himself with the members of House Strong at the dining table. Alys Rivers joins them for a moment. After discussing the defeat at Rook's Rest and the supply of Harrenhal, Daemon demands to be called "King."

Without Rhaenyra's consent, Jace meets Lord Forrest Frey and his wife, Lady Sabitha, who control the river Trident crossing between the north and the south. Promising them lordship over Harrenhal and the protection of his dragon Vermax against Aemond and Vhagar, Jace obtains their allegiance to enable the Northern troops to march south. He also gets the "bent knees" of House Frey.

Daemon participates in the castle's restoration, until he hears creepy voices, screams, and similar noises. Alys is watching him and admits that she hears suffering on the wind. They are from the lands of House Bracken. Daemon tells Alys that he gave House Bracken a chance to bend the knee and they refused. He is convinced that Aegon won't survive and the realm will suffer as long as Aemond sits on the Iron Throne. So he intends to claim the Iron Throne with Rhaenyra by his side once the war is won. Simon Strong joins them then and points out the Blackwood's victory. House Bracken has finally declared for Prince Daemon.

After the Blackwoods have looted and ravaged the Bracken's lands while displaying Targaryen banners, a delegation of Riverlords arrive at Harrenhal and denounce Daemon as a tyrant.

At the Eyrie
Lady Jeyne Arryn declares that the Eyrie's only weakness would be an attack from the sky with dragonfire and is displeased at not receiving an adult dragon to protect the Vale in exchange for sheltering Rhaenyra's youngest sons. She also refuses to send the 15.000 soldiers, she promised to Rhaenyra. Rhaena attempts to soothe the situation by pointing out Jeyne was given two young dragons instead of only one, and they will grow large. Jeyne says it will take too long for the dragons to mature. Rhaena is also frustrated by not having her own dragon and being kept away from the war. More misery follows, when Rhaena learns of her grandmother's death.

On Driftmark
Corlys learns about his wife's death and is broken when he enters the Hall of Nine.

Rhaenyra sends Baela to ask Corlys to be her Hand. Baela delivers him the sigil, but mourning Rhaenys, he initially refuses; Baela convinces him to accept. In turn, he wants to make her his heir, though she refuses, saying that she is a Targaryen and Driftmark needs a Velaryon.

At Dragonstone
Rhaenyra mourns Rhaenys's death.

The Black Council is in turmoil. Ser Alfred Broome points out the death of Rhaenys and Meleys and the loss of Rook's Rest and Duskendale. Rhaenyra admits being untrained in warfare but notes that the all-male council is equally inexperienced due to the previous kings, Jaehaerys I and Viserys I, having peaceful reigns. When her advisors remind her that Vhagar is still their largest threat but also exhausted after killing Meleys, Rhaenyra suggests again to fly to battle herself, but the Council dissuade her.

Elsewhere in the castle, Jace has enough of doing nothing. He plans to fly to Harrenhal and to treat Daemon. On his way to the Dragonmount he meets his fiancée, Lady Baela, who doesn't believe that Jace can convince Daemon to keep his oath, if the Queen herself couldn't. But Jace reminds her that they need Daemon and Caraxes, when Rhaenys and Meleys are dead. He remembers that Lord Cregan Stark's troops could use the crossing by the Twins, to enter the Riverlands, so they wouldn't have to wait for Daemon to get an army. So he decides to fly to the Twins to negotiate with House Frey. Baela promises to not tell Rhaenyra anything until Jace is gone.

Rhaenyra is furious about her Black Council, that her advisors speak more around her than to her. She is also frustrated that war has ever been for men to make. When Mysaria reminds her that she is King Viserys's chosen successor, Rhaenyra points out: "He did not prepare me to fight. If I have been a son, a sword thrust into my hand the moment I could stand on my own feet. Instead I was given my father's cup. Took the name of every lord and castle between Storm's End and the Twins, but not the difference between hield and frieble. And they know it. And Daemon as well." But Mysaria reminds her at Ser Criston's terrible mistake, by parading Meleys' head in King's Landing like a price of war. By the smallfolk seeing a bad omen in a dead dragon, Mysaria advises Rhaenyra to trust into the "help" of the common people of the capital. On Mysaria's advice, Rhaenyra sends her handmaiden Elinda Massey to King's Landing as a spy; she also dispatches council member Ser Alfred Broome to Harrenhal to confer with Daemon.

At night, Rhaenyra comforts her stepdaughter Baela, who is mourning her deceased grandmother. They talk about the night, Rhaenys claimed Meleys in the Dragonpit and Daemon's fury, for losing his mother's dragon to his cousin. Rhaenyra then asks Baela to meet with her grandfather and give him a symbol of his new position: Hand of the Queen.

Though initially frustrated by his disobedience, Rhaenyra praises Jace for his success at the Twins. They discuss that their only hope against Vhagar are Dragonstone's large dragons, Vermithor and Silverwing, both without riders. Jace suggests potential dragonriders may be found in other noble houses due to earlier Targaryens marrying into them. Rhaenyra worries the Valyrian bloodline may have become too thin over many generations, but they decide to search Dragonstone's genealogical records.
