Dom Cobb, a skilled thief who steals secrets from people's subconscious through shared dreams, accepts a lucrative job to perform "inception" by planting an idea in the mind of Robert Fischer, a corporate heir, in exchange for being able to return home to his children. Cobb assembles a team and sedates Robert into multiple layered dreams where time moves differently on each level, but they face unexpected obstacles including projections of Robert's subconscious trained to stop them and Cobb's projection of his deceased wife Mal, who sabotages the mission. After rescuing Robert and Saito from Limbo and successfully implanting the idea that Robert should forge his own path rather than inherit his father's company, Cobb returns to reality, clears his criminal charges, and is reunited with his children, choosing not to verify whether he has truly awakened from the dream.
