A countdown clock shows 439 days and 19 hours counting down to an unknown event. At the Very Large Array, two astronomers meet in the night, one having discovered a signal from space which repeats every 78 seconds, the other shocked and doubting it, initially believing it to be a signal from Earth that bounced off the moon. In the morning, he is joined by other astronomers, who too are perplexed by the signal, especially now that they know it came from 600 light years away. Later that day, even more astronomers travel to the VLA who too are scuffling over the signal while the first two discoverers, Bob and Ray, play catch with a football outside, wondering what the signal decodes to. Bob, having an epiphany while playing football, realizes what the signal truly is: an RNA sequence.

In a flash-forward to 71 days and 13 hours before the deadline, Carol Sturka, a bestselling author, is at a book reading. Her romance fantasy novel has attracted dozens eager to hear her read. Despite their enthusiasm, Carol privately dismisses her work as shallow. She’s accompanied by her partner, Helen, who appears to also be her manager helping her facilitate the reading and related work projects.

In another flash-forward, the countdown clock now says that 29 days and 23 hours remain. In a laboratory, two researchers are studying mice when one appears to die. Jenn checks for a heartbeat, but has to remove her gloves, only for the mouse to bite her. Jenn immediately convulses, prompting her colleague to shove her into decontamination, but the effort is futile. She appears to have contracted an unknown virus. It spreads rapidly, transmitted through kissing, and soon the entire facility is overtaken. The infected move in unison, calmly collecting mouth swabs, while Jenn deliberately contaminates a box of doughnuts in the lobby.

Three hours before the looming event, Carol and Helen head to a bar. Carol debates whether to abandon what she calls her “trashy” fiction and finally focus on the serious novel she believes she should write. Stepping outside for a smoke, she notices an unusual sight: plane trails aligned perfectly in the sky. Her attention returns to the ground only when a man crashes his pickup truck into a parked car. Carol rushes over to help him but he isn't responsive.

She calls over to Helen to help but realizes that Helen is also acting strangely and collapses to the ground. Rushing to help her, Carol runs inside to see who can help but she realizes that whatever has affected Helen and the driver outside has also affected every single person in the bar. Every patron is convulsing, except Carol. She hauls Helen into a pickup, drives off, and watches in shock as the city burns. She soon discovers she’s the only one left unaffected. When Helen dies, everyone nearby abruptly emerges from their trance and turns their attention to Carol. A doctor tries to infect her with a kiss, but it fails. As the group chants, “We just want to help, Carol,” she speeds away.

Across the city, the entranced population works cooperatively to extinguish fires while tracking Carol’s movements, some even following her on foot. She manages to reach her house, where two neighbor children, speaking in unison, tell her where to find her spare key. Inside, she sees the hive-mind citizens loading the dead into a truck. When she turns on the TV, the broadcast shifts to a direct message addressed specifically to her, inviting her to call when ready.

After pouring herself a drink for courage, Carol phones the top government official, who reassures her that she’s safe and should remain home for the next few days. He explains that the group now controlling the population has access to extraterrestrial technology. Fourteen months earlier, the radio signal was received - though it wasn’t just a message, but a formula. Scientists recreated it in a lab, accidentally producing a psychic bond that unified the infected into a single hive mind. Eleven people worldwide remain immune, including Carol. The collective wants her to join them but they need to figure out how to make it happen.

In the smoky outskirts of Tangier, Morocco, a woman trails along a hill towards an upturned, slightly burned car with a man's body inside. She removes the body from the car with the help of another man who later arrives in a box truck. The two take the body to the box truck, where it contains additional dead bodies, but before she can finish placing the body inside, a man in a motorcycle arrives on the road, and the two switch places as she takes his helmet and motorcycle and rides across the countryside, passing by several other dead bodies being collected to Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport.

She boards the cockpit of a Lockheed C-130 and taxies the plane to a runway, where a crashed plane's wreckage stands at the end. Despite the wreckage, she successfully takes off from the runway. When she lands in Albuquerque, she heads into a communal shower, shedding her clothes as other hivemind members bow and attend to her.

The clock now says 11 hours and 26 minutes have passed since the beginning of the Joining. Carol wakes from her drunken haze and slowly absorbs the reality she’s trapped in. Grief overwhelms her as she wraps Helen’s body in an old blanket and struggles to dig a grave, chipping away at stubborn volcanic rock. As she works under the punishing heat, a U.S. Air Force drone watches from 40,000 feet above. Nearly collapsing from exhaustion, she’s approached by a woman offering her a bottle of water.

Carol dismissively pours the water onto the grass instead of drinking it, reluctant to eat or drink anything given to her by someone else, only to realize that the woman before her looks exactly like Raban, the gender-swapped version of a character she once conceptualized. This woman, Zosia, explains that the group has access to Helen’s memories as Helen joined before dying, which is how they knew to send someone who looked like a female Raban to speak to Carol.

When Carol lashes out at Zosia in the street, she suddenly collapses. Everyone else (except Carol and the immune) also go still at the same moment, stunned into temporary paralysis. Later Carol discovers that the brief freeze had killed millions around the world. Horrified and physically sick, Carol eventually regains enough strength to continue her grim task, helped by a mini-digger dropped from a helicopter.

Zosia reveals that another unjoined person has surfaced - a man in Paraguay. Carol immediately wants to meet others like herself. She asks Zosia how many speak English and Zosia confirms that five others do and they agree to meet. Carol boards an empty plane headed for Bilbao, choosing to sit in the back of economy class even though she has the entire aircraft to herself.

2 days and 2 hours have passed since the joining of humanity. Carol arrives at the airport and meets the five other unaffected individuals who can speak English: Xiu Mei, Kusimayu, Laxmi, and Otgonbayar, each accompanied by family members. The final arrival is Koumba Diabaté, who shows up aboard Air Force One and has surrounded himself with luxury and a harem of supermodels.

Carol is the only one deeply uneasy about the new world order, and she tries to rally the unjoined together to “fix” things. But tensions rise immediately - Laxmi reveals her grandfather died during Carol’s earlier outburst, and she insists Carol needs to learn what the Collective truly is. Others defend the hive mind too. Koumba argues that crime has vanished, racism is gone, animals have been released from captivity, and violence of any kind is unthinkable. The Others are strict vegetarians who refuse to kill any living creature.

Carol eventually loses patience, shouting at the Collective, and her fury once again sends all of them into a trance.

At 2 days and 16 hours after the world change, Carol regains consciousness. Zosia and the other Joined can’t help contain her emotions, and after watching their own families seize because of her, they all leave - except one person: Koumba. He plans to fly to Las Vegas with Zosia as his sexual companion but asks for Carol’s permission, since the Others cannot decide for her. Repulsed, Carol tells Zosia she should choose for herself but Zosia insists she cannot choose as her goal is just to make them happy. Carol lets Zosia go so she boards Koumba's plane.

Carol departs and heads back toward her plane. Moments before takeoff however, Carol changes her mind and rushes to stop Koumba's plane.

In a flashback to 2,617 days before the global outbreak, Carol and Helen are on a trip at an ice hotel in Norway. Helen delights in the novelty and beauty of their frozen lodging, while Carol remains unimpressed by their ice bed and freezing cold surroundings - though she softens when they sit together and watch the aurora borealis shimmer outside their window.

Back in the present, 3 days and 3 hours after the outbreak, Carol is once again flying in Economy. Zosia is on board as well, and this time the plane is being flown by Captain John McConnell. Carol’s frustrations boil over as she laments that not a single one of the immune individuals have any science or medical background, which in theory could help them.

As she gets briefed on the other immune individuals, Carol hears more about the man from Paraguay - Manousos Oviedo, a self-storage manager who speaks only Spanish and has avoided any interaction with the Joined. Determined to reach him, Carol calls, but he shouts in Spanish back and hangs up. With nothing accomplished, Carol goes back home. Zosia hands her a batch of collected mail before parting ways.

Among the packages is a massage gun Helen had ordered to help Carol relax while on book tour. The gift rattles Carol, and when she phones Zosia to confirm its origins, she abruptly demands that Zosia scrub all memories of Helen from the Collective.

At 4 days and 12 hours past the Joining, Carol wakes to find food delivered at her door. She throws it away in defiance, insisting she doesn’t want their assistance. Later, she discovers her local supermarket, Sprouts, is completely empty. Zosia explains that the hive mind is reorganizing essential goods for efficient global distribution. Annoyed, Carol calls again to reiterate that she wants to shop like a normal person.

Moments later, a huge convoy of trucks and dozens of Collective workers arrive, restocking every aisle in perfect coordination. Carol shops alone afterward, ultimately settling on a microwavable dinner for the evening. As she eats and watches TV, the power across town suddenly goes out. Zosia informs her that the Collective is conserving electricity. Since no one works at night and crime has vanished, the Joined see no reason to keep the lights on. They accidentally shut Carol's power off but turn it back on shortly thereafter.

Irritated, Carol sarcastically orders Zosia to bring her a hand grenade and Zosia actually, dutifully does. The absurdity of it finally cracks Carol’s hardened exterior, and she invites Zosia inside for a drink. Zosia admits the Collective has no timeline for turning her into one of them,

Carol references a personal memory to Zosia, who gently interrupts with a detail from Carol and Helen’s Arctic trip. Carol reacts with fury, grabs the grenade, and pulls the pin. Zosia, startled, immediately hurls it out the window and tackles Carol as it explodes. Carol is stunned to discover the grenade was real.

Zosia suffers burns and a concussion from the resulting explosion, and is hospitalized, leaving Carol shaken. Reflecting on the Collective’s willingness to hand her a live explosive, she tests them asking if they would give various weapons including a nuclear weapon. Despite some deliberation, they say that they would.

Manousos, the unaffected man in Paraguay, is still living off-grid in his storage facility, determined to stay out of the hivemind’s reach. He spends his days changing radio stations, hoping to catch a signal that proves someone else like him is still free. Food is running out, and although the Others attempt to deliver a meal, he refuses their help and knocks it to the floor with a crowbar. He scavenges through other's storage units to find what little food is available- a few sugar packets and some dog food. Back in the office, the phone rings and it's Carol. He hangs up on her twice and on the third call when she insults him, he seems surprised, realizing maybe she is unaffected like him. He writes down her name in a notebook, but appearing to mishear her name, writing it down as "¿CAROL ES TURCA?".

Seven days and eight hours after the Collective takeover, Carol leaves the hospital and finds an empty police car to drive home. When she arrives, she’s startled to find that the Others, even including the former Mayor, Tim Keller, have repaired all the damage to her house. She quickly sends them away and retreats to her office, where she begins writing a set of rules she’s observed about the Joined- including their absolute honesty and their desire to please her.

Curious to push things further, Carol invites one of them inside. The man, formerly known as Larry gushes over her work, quoting her books and equating them to Shakespeare, influenced by the fervent devotion of an extreme fan named Moira who once credited Carol’s writing with saving her life. Carol presses Larry on what Helen really thought of her books. Larry is hesitant to respond, clearly not wanting to offend Carol, but he admits that Helen had always considered the books pleasant but insubstantial. She only pushed to publish Carol’s unfinished novel because she thought it would make Carol happy and because it wouldn’t hurt her own career. While this information hurts, Carol confirms her theory that, despite their best wishes, they cannot lie to her. She sends Larry away.

She then heads back to the hospital to see Zosia and bluntly asks if the Joined state can be undone. Zosia clearly does not want to answer, but her hesitance tells Carol that yes it can. Carol sneaks into the hospital lab, pilfering equipment and drugs. The Joined dutifully hand over heroin when she requests it, but she actually uses sodium thiopental on herself to see how it affects her -and more importantly if it makes her say more than she'd like. After filming herself take the drug and seeing her response to it, it was indeed the case, especially after explicitly finding Zosia attractive, calling her "fuckable". Carol forms a plan. She goes back to the hospital.

Carol injects the drug into Zosia’s intravenous drip and wheels her outside for "some air", waiting for the sedation to lower her senses. Once it hits, Carol demands to know how to reverse the Joined. But the Others quickly sense something is wrong and closes in, forming a tight ring around them and chanting “Please, Carol,” over and over, while crying. Carol keeps pressing Zosia to answer her question, even handcuffing her own wrist to Zosia's to prevent the Others from taking her away.

Before Carol gets the answer she wants, Zosia suddenly goes into cardiac arrest. Horrified by what she’s triggered, Carol releases her grip and watches as the Others scramble to save Zosia’s life.

In the hospital, the hivemind continue their work, but they are a bit more distant and reserved than their normal smiley selves. As Carol waits for Zosia's recovery, she receives a call from Laxmi, chastising her for wreaking havoc amongst the Others and making her son, and everyone in the world, cry. After this, Carol takes a nap, during which the Others, in the hospital as well as in Albuquerque, decide to depart the city. Carol wakes up to realize that everyone has abandoned her and is rushing to leave the city. The others leave a voice message explaining that help will still be available to her, however, in the light of today's events, they need "a little space".

Later that night, Carol makes a video for the other immune, explaining her discoveries about the Others, and asking for help. She then calls the Others, demanding that her video be translated into several different languages and sent to the immune. The Others oblige, and send in a drone to pick up the video. Later, she goes to sleep, but wakes up to the sound of wolves digging in her garbage. In the morning she calls another drone to pick up the garbage, but it gets stuck in a lamp-post, prompting her to dump the garbage on her own. As she drops the garbage in other trash bins in town, she discovers a huge number of empty milk cartons in the recyling containers. She climbs into one and reads that the milk cartons came from a local dairy factory.

Carol goes to investigate the factory herself, curious if this milk is really milk. She discovers a strange liquid being created from a white powder instead of milk at the factory. She tests the pH to be neutral. She records her findings in her camera again, however, she deletes the video before recording another one and sending it to the Others to be translated and sent forward to the immune.

When the wolves return again in the night, this time to dig up Helen's body, Carol crashes a police cruiser into her backyard, desperate to scare off the wolves. She dozes off in the car, leaving the lights on all night.

The next day, she lays heavy tiles on Helen's grave to protect it from damage. She paints Helen's name on one of the tiles in memoriam. She later traces the crystalline powder to a local packaging factory, Agri-Jet. Inside, she finds piles of stockpiled food. Down one of the aisles, she unveils a tarp and is shocked by what she sees.

In a panic, Carol flees the Agri-Jet warehouse after the horrifying discovery she’s just made. Shaking, she grabs her camcorder, determined to document proof of what she’s seen. After steadying herself, she forces herself back inside to film.

She records shelves lined with shrink-wrapped packages containing amputated human body parts. The entire facility is stacked with vacuum-sealed remains, processed and prepared for consumption. She realizes that the Others operate industrial meat grinders, pulping the bodies into a substance they turn into their food supply.

Carol returns home to pack her belongings. This time she decides not to rely on drones or intermediaries, still unsure if anyone has even seen her videos. She decides that she will deliver the evidence herself.

Koumba Diabaté is living in Las Vegas in full luxury mode, gambling like a suave high-roller while the Others silently maintain the space around him. Living out a fantasy lifestyle, he lounges in hot tubs with multiple companions before Carol finally arrives. She’s directed to the Westgate Hotel, where Diabaté is waiting. He admits he has already watched Carol’s earlier recordings, and she’s stunned to learn the Others freely allowed him access.

Even more shocking, Diabaté already knows the truth: the Collective is consuming human remains. Instead of recoiling, he calmly prepares to explain, showing Carol a video with John Cena narrating. The video outlines the system- the white liquid is mostly blended stockpiled food close to expiration, mixed with about 12% “HDP”: human-derived protein.

Around 100,000 people die every day through natural causes or accidents. Rather than allow the bodies to rot or be eaten by animals, the Collective is repurposing the remains as a sustainable protein source. It’s revealed that Diabaté and John Cena have been in frequent contact, and Diabaté asked about the “milk” a week earlier. The rest of the immune survivors, except the silent Manousos, already know this and largely accept it. Worse still, the Others will begin dying within a decade unless they stabilize their food supply, making HDP a necessity in their eyes.

Carol is crushed when she realizes how isolated she truly is. None of the others share her horror or urgency. She is the only one deeply disturbed. She also discovers that they meet twice a week, often on Zoom calls, to discuss the situation. They voted to not include her in the chats.

The next morning, Diabaté drops an even more unsettling revelation: the Others cannot forcibly convert people yet. The process requires consent, because the virus must be customized using individual stem cells taken directly from the body in an invasive procedure that was only discovered the day before. For now, Diabaté refuses to consent, and Carol emphatically professes to the Others that she does not and will not ever consent.

In a flashback to 9 days and 18 hours after the Joining, Manousos sits alone scanning radio frequencies, on the verge of giving up. Every channel is static except one strange signal he’s marked as 8.613.0, which produces a distinct, patterned noise.

That night, Carol’s videotape finally reaches him. Inspired by what he sees, Manousos decides to leave his isolation. Just as he does, power is restored across the town. He returns to his apartment, packs up his belongings, eats a real meal, and prepares to escape.

His car stalls, forcing him to proceed on foot. A woman resembling his mother (who is one of the Others) speaks to him, but he ignores her. Manousos pushes the car downhill, jump-starts it, and drives away.
