THEORY ASSESSMENT
The episode's flashback sequence places Dr. Mauer at the fertility clinic and Gemma explicitly traces the Bardo cards to that mailing list, making the recruitment pipeline structurally coherent, though the show stops short of confirming the clinic is a Lumon operation.
WHY THIS MATTERS
If Lumon manufactured the conditions that made both Gemma and Mark recruitable, then the show's central love story is not a tragedy that a corporation opportunistically exploited but a wound the corporation opened on purpose. The distinction matters because it reframes what Cold Harbor is: not research into grief but a closed-loop system designed to generate grief, extract its emotional architecture, and sell the resulting product back to the man it was extracted from.
