Boyd's quest to lead the residents home reaches a terrifying crossroads, and nothing will ever be the same again.

Plot
At the Bottle Tree, Boyd and the others anxiously wait for word from Jade and Tabitha, who are gathering the bones of the Children down below. As they do so, Jade reveals that he lied about the bones protecting the chamber, and instructs Tabitha to be ready with the bones, while he slows down the Creatures. He tells her that he was glad he got to spend all of those lifetimes with someone like her before signaling the team above ground to uproot the tree. They uproot the tree with the Town Truck just as the Cowboy Creature rips down the tarp. However, the sunlight blocks the Creatures, who wince in pain at its touch. Boyd throws down the ladder, but as Tabitha climbs, it snaps. The sky rapidly turns dark, but as the Creatures advance, an earthquake strikes, forcing them back.

At the Sheriff’s Station, Kenny lets Victor out of his cell, and he scolds Kenny for pulling down the tree. After the earthquake subsides, Tabitha and Jade run out of the chamber. Above ground, Boyd tries to get an update from the two in the Tunnels, but hearing the Creatures screeching, the others urge him to leave. His attempt to descend into the Tunnels himself is prevented by the Creatures’ arrival. He orders everyone into the vehicles and they drive off.

Jade and Tabitha run through the Tunnels, with the Creatures on their trail. Finding themselves at a dead end, but the Creatures are blocked as part of the Tunnels collapse.

As the others drive back to Town, Patty hyperventilates in the back of the van. Boyd tries to calm her, but she scolds them for making things worse, accusing Boyd of lying that they would be able to go home. While everyone is distracted that runs at the van, Patty grabs Boyd’s gun and fires a shot, shattering a window. Boyd wrests the gun back as she sobs.

At the Clinic, Fatima panics while Mari calmly straightens up after the earthquake. As she argues with Mari, Fatima begins seeing through Smiley’s eyes as he approaches the Clinic. She warns Mari, who races to try and rehang the Talisman that had fallen during the earthquake. Unable to rehang it in time, the two retreat to a bedroom, but he is able to enter before they can hang the talisman inside. Mari tries to defend Fatima, whom he greets as “mother,” with a knife, but he slices her stomach open. As Smiley leaves, he grins at the truck as it pulls up. The passengers run inside, and Kristi finds Mari bleeding out. Fatima runs to get Kristi’s supply bag, while Kristi tries to assure her that she will be alright. Mari, knowing she is dying, asks for a final kiss, which Kristi provides as Mari succumbs to her injuries. Sobbing, Kristi holds Mari’s body and tells her she loves her.

At the Diner, Sophia offers Elgin a chance to go home if he agrees to help her, as she offered Clara. She tells him that the sky has grown dark as they are getting close to “the end,” which well get “very messy.” Sophia forces Elgin into the back and orders him to give her his hands, asking one last time if he accepts her bargain. Elgin begins praying, while Sophia begins squeezing his hands. Elgin cries out and collapses, bleeding from his orifices as he dies. As daylight returns, Sophia orders Clara to get rid of the body. When asked what happens next, Sophia answers that she will now light the match and watch it all burn, grabbing the Talisman as she leaves.

Donna checks on Henry, who says that none of this can be real. Donna suggests that he check on Victor in the Sheriff’s Station, but he says he will straighten up the room first, declining her offer of help. Finding several bullets, he asks Donna about them, and she explains that Victor used to carry around a gun in his lunchbox, but Boyd confiscated it, and it is likely kept at the Sheriff’s Station. While he recalls his vision’s instructions, Donna urges him to check on his son.

Boyd arrives at the Clinic and finds Randall on the stoop, asking what happened. Inside, Fatima tells Ellis that Smiley spared her after killing Mari. Boyd enters, and is directed to Kristi’s room, where he finds her cradling Mari’s body. As Kristi breaks into tears again, Boyd sits by her and holds her.

A red bolt of lightning emerges from the chasm where the Bottle Tree stood. A violent storm brews overhead, drawing everyone outside. As the van arrives at Colony House, Ethan and Julie notice that Tabitha is absent, and he runs inside.

Sophia stops by the Church, where she grabs the Talisman. Meanwhile, Henry finds the Sheriff’s Station empty. He then searches through the drawers until he finds Victor’s revolver. He passes Kenny as he leaves.

Donna and Julie find Ethan crying in the kitchen, and he asks if his mother is dead. As Donna sits with him, the cabinet doors begin slamming on their own, and glasses fly off the shelves, causing the three to leave. Julie follows Ethan, who cries that their parents are dead, soon he will be left alone. Julie tries to reassure him, promising that they will take care of each other.

Boyd finds Kenny cleaning up the Sheriff’s Station. Kenny asks what happened, and Boyd says that Victor was right. Acosta and Sara arrive and urge him to return to the Tunnels to find the bones, as they remain the key to their escape. Boyd points out that Jade and Tabitha are likely dead, and no one else knows what to do with the bones. Boyd refuses to return to the Tunnels after everything that has happened, but Sara points out that they are getting a faint signal on the radio.

In the Tunnels, Jade sends out one last signal as the battery dies. Tabitha suggests that they dig out the posts barring the archway to their cave. As they dig, Tabitha thanks Jade for his selflessness.

Randall and Ellis carry Marielle’s body to the cart as Boyd arrives. Randall and Kristi head to the Church, while Boyd tells Ellis and Fatima that Jade and Tabitha may still be alive. Ellis and Fatima insist on joining him, with Fatima offering to help them sense the Creatures. At the Sheriff’s Station, Sophia finds the building empty, and pockets the Talisman.

In his room, Henry loads Victor’s gun just before Victor arrives. Victor asks if he did something wrong, as his father has devolved since he was told about the Man in Yellow. Henry tells him he did nothing wrong, but the problem is that none of this is real. He tells his son that he has seen what is real and wants to return, pointing the gun at Victor, who tells him that he is being lied to. Ethan arrives, startling Henry who points the gun at him. Victor tackles his father, knocking the gun out of his hands. Victor shouts at Henry, asking why he is doing this as a terrified Ethan looks on.

Sophia grabs the Bar’s Talisman and meets Clara on the porch, who hands her a bag. Meanwhile, Boyd, Ellis and Fatima enter the Tunnels. Boyd urges them to run if anything happens. Meanwhile, Jade and Tabitha continue to try and dig themselves out, but progress is slow as they work by hand. Tabitha suggests they use the bones. As the trio make their way through the Tunnels, Fatima stops them, detecting a nearby Creature.

As they dig, Jade remarks that it is difficult to believe that any of this is real. Tabitha examines a skull, sadly realizing it was their daughter’s. However, they are interrupted by the sounds of the Creatures’ screeches. Fatima warns Boyd and Ellis that the Creatures have located Jade and Tabitha, leading them on. Jade kicks the bars down as the other three arrive. Boyd shoots the bars down, but with Creatures drawing near, Fatima  urges them to flee, promising to buy them time. Asking they remember who she was, Fatima transforms into a Creature and confronts the others, while Boyd drags Ellis out of the chamber.

As Sophia walks to a Farway Tree, she is confronted by the Boy in White. The Boy notes that they have the bones, and she will lose this time. Sophia points out that the Bottle Tree is gone, though she admires his optimism. She then dumps the bag of Talismans into the tree.
